Turbogears trac is being spammed

Reported by: alastair Owned by: Chris Arndt
Priority: high Milestone: 1.0.4
Component: Web site Version: 1.0.2
Severity: critical Keywords:

Please see e.g. #1327, #1318, #1319, #1321, #1320.

Please take additional measures to prevent trac spam, otherwise I won't be submitting bugs (or patches, which I believe I provided for every bug report I've submitted so far) via Turbogears trac in future. If that means adding a CAPTCHA or something to the ticket view page, then so be it.

I'm pasting some relevant excerpts from an internal developer discussion on this topic:

Christopher Arndt schrieb:

I'm trying to upgrade trac to the latest version in the .10.x series,
because with the version that is currently running on turbogears.org we
have the strange effect that the administration pages for the SpamFilter
plug-in do not appear in the admin interface. I hope that a fresh
install of trac will solve this glitch. Then I can play around with the
spam filter configuration.

Unfortunately, I'm getting strange errors about missing files, if I just
try to update the trac install with easy_install. I'll have to
investigate this further tonight.

I don't think that the SpamFilter supports captchas or
comments/registration moderation. But I hope that with the help of the
Askimet plug-in and other spamfilter mechanism, we can get the spam
under control.
A little update on this: I have just spent more than three hours
installing a new (0.10.4) trac version (independant of the production
server) and trying to get the SpamFilter plugin to work. So far not with
much success, since the documentation on the configuration settings for
this plug-in is rather sparse.

I have written to the trac ML to ask for help [1]. If anybody has
experience with this plugin, please let me know.

We now installed a new version of trac with the SpamFilter? plugin. This uses Askimet and a Bayesian filter to protect against spam.

We need to watch the site within the next few weeks to see how it works out and to trai n the Bayesian filter and other fine tuning.

SpamFilter? seems to work reasonably now. I you have problems submitting tickets or comments, please write to sysadmin AT turbogears DOT org.

Note: See TracTickets for help on using tickets.
