tg-admin toolbox starts a browser

Description

When I run tg-admin toolbox, my computer insists on starting up Firefox. I know that you're only trying to make it easier for people, but I don't use Firefox for development, only for casual browsing.

I don't think our commandline tools should insist on starting GUI applications unneccesarily. It might look good in 20 minute presentation, but to me it's just an annoyance.

What is your problem? That it starts Firefox or generally, that it starts a browser (but without a browser, the toolbox makes little sense, so I don't understand the issue then)?

Well, both, actually. Firefox takes ages to start on old machines and eats a lot of RAM. In addition to that, you should never spawn GUI-apps from CLI-utilities. It looks neat in a screencast, but most people already have a browser running and having TG start another instance is just a bit annoying.

Just looked into the code. Firefox is not hardwired there; it opens your default browser (at least it should - is Firefox not your default browser?). And if Firefox is already running, it just opens a new tab in the running Firefox instance (at least it should - does this not work for you?).

I think it is ok to assume that a development machine of a web app developer is able to open a webbrowser without breaking together. And by the way, if you really don't want to open the browser, you can start toolbox with the -n option.

Well, apparently we won't agree in a hurry. Not that I really care – I left TurboGears for greener pastures long ago.

Yes, the pasture is always looking greener on the other side. We're trying to make TG a nice pasture anyway.

It's not that I want to insist on the current behavior or don't appreciate your feedback. But we need really convincing arguments or more than one user complaining about an established feature before we can consider changing it. So I'm closing this ticket for now.

Oh, spare me your arrogance, will you?

Sorry if I came across as arrogant. Maybe I should have put a smilie after the remark about pastures? When I wrote I appreciate your feedback, I really meant it, and I was also ready to discuss this issue if you really cared.
