Ticket #1613 (closed defect: fixed)

Website has unclear install instructions for beta version.

Reported by: guest Owned by: Chris Arndt
Priority: normal Milestone: 1.0.4
Component: Web site Version: 1.0.4b2
Severity: normal Keywords:

  1. Decide to try TG
  2. Go to TG site and see that 1.0.4 looks like the best for a new project. (SA if needed, etc.)
  3. Click "Download Now" in the "1.0.4b2" boxed area.
  4. Reach a page that looks like it's an install guide.
  5. Click "Unix-like Systems". (Skipping quick start.)
  6. Follow directions.

You have TG 1.0.3 (stable) installed.

The Problem

There is only a single set of install pages for stable and beta. Yet, I was fooled by the "Download Now" link on the homepage's "Beta Version" specific area. I thought I was going to a beta version specific guide. Not so.

The Fix

Two options:

  1. Make a dedicated "beta version" DL info area.
  2. Use "Big Letters" (h1 level) headings right at the top of all shared DL info pages to separate out the folks who want to try the beta version.

The Next Step

Release an up-to-date Ubuntu .deb for each stable and beta release to help new users.

Change History

comment:1 Changed 12 years ago by guest

  • Owner changed from Chris Arndt to anonymous
  • Component changed from website to Installation

Also: (Important) (Not sure how to edit the original ticket)

After first running:

wget http://www.turbogears.org/download/tgsetup.py
sudo python tgsetup.py

 easy_install "TurboGears==1.0.4b2"

I wound up with two copies of tg-admin in my system.

  1. /usr/local/bin/tg-admin
  2. /usr/bin/tg-admin

The one in "local/bin" was the stable version. The one in "bin" was the (correct) beta version

  • Owner changed from anonymous to Chris Arndt
  • Version changed from to 1.0.4b2
  • Component changed from Installation to website

I've opened up a separate ticket #1614 for the tgsetup issue.

The website issue still stands.

I have created a new draft page on the doc wiki with beta installation instructions:

This page nees to be revised by some people first, before it can be linked from the homepage and this ticket can be closed.

  • Status changed from new to assigned

comment:5 Changed 11 years ago by Chris Arndt

  • Status changed from assigned to closed
  • Resolution set to fixed

The new beta installation instructions page is now liked from the "download" button for the beta version on the website.
