promoting "alternative components"

Reported by: sluggoster@… Owned by: jorge.vargas
Priority: normal Milestone: 1.0
Component: Documentation Version:
Severity: normal Keywords:

TurboGears needs a second "About" page on the website to deal with the two types of users that are coming to it:

1) People who just want an integrated solution, and don't care what the components are as long as somebody else chooses them. Often these people are new to Python or new to programming. The current "About" page caters to these.

2) Experienced Python web programmers, who often have specific ideas about what kinds of tools they prefer to work with, or have a lot of legacy modules/templates they want to use with TurboGears. The proposed page would cater to these people, and highlight TurboGears' flexibility. It would show what can and can't be done beyond the default, and what is and isn't supported. In particular, it should mention the possibility of Cheetah templates, link to a HOWTO, and explain the limitations of Cheetah support.

Cheetah should be further promoted in the docs by changing "Template plugins" on  http://www.turbogears.org/docs/ to: "Template plugins (Cheetah)", "Template plugins (Cheetah, etc.)", or "Cheetah and other template plugins".

Pages for Python programmers coming from specific other environments (e.g., other web frameworks) would be useful too. Give them a walk through TG's structure in terms that are familiar to them.
