Enhancements for CogBin

Reported by: anonymous Owned by: lszyba1
Priority: normal Milestone:
Component: TurboGears Version: 2.0
Severity: normal Keywords: tosplit

Description (last modified by jorge.vargas) (diff)

Here is a list of enhancements for CogBin?:

  • A table of contents section should be added to the page to simplify navigation as the page grows larger. [done]
  • Currently the project name and version columns are vertically centered and should be changed to align to the top to clean up the appearances of the tables. [done]
  • Projects in each section should be sorted in alphabetical order. [done]
  • A new column is needed for Supported TurboGears Versions. Not sure how this would be accomplished as this information is not available from the Cheese Shop.
  • Once Supported TurboGears Version is supported a filter on the top of the page should be added to show only the projects that are compatible for the version of TG the user is interested in.
  • For the Widgets section it would be nice if there was an image to make it easier for users to find Widgets of interest.

Also, are there any links to the CogBin? page outside of it's mention in the mailing list? I have not seen one so I assume most new users or those who don't search the list will not likely find the page. Maybe the links are there and I just have not come across them.

With regards to the supported version, this information should be available inside the egg. I haven't tested to see what happens if TG can't load a plugin (TG crash? TG works but application fails (if it requires the plugin in some version...)? App will be defective for sure since it needs the plugin...)

I believe that the image thing is only possible if there's a place in TG's site to upload such images or if all such packages are installed and some "preview" image convention is created... I don't the second is viable and I believe the first is a bit hard to happen... IMHO, the links to Cheese Shop are enough and you can follow them to the plugin URL and see if there's more information there (demo application, images, docs, etc.).

I'll see if I can make these changes in new tg2 cogbin.

One question do. Where can I get tg version the app was build for?

  • Owner changed from anonymous to lszyba1
  • Version set to 2.0

I think the CogBin? should be dropped. I does not add much value above the cheeseshop. It could probably be replaced by a few PyPI search links in the documentation. I'm giving this ticket a 2.0 version number now, since I don't plan to to update the old TG 1 CogBin?. If the plans for a tg2 CogBin? are not pursued anymore, please close this ticket as "wontfix".

For getting the requirements of an application, look at the pkg_resources API.

I'm currently -0 on this one. I really like the idea of having a tool specialized in TG packages that said I don't think we currently have the manpower to maintain a cogbin.turbogears.org

I do agree with pypi searches being the equivalent, and since the QS generates the proper tags it will be even simpler.
